Marinas, Harbours & Anchorages
There are numerous modern well-equipped purpose-built marinas with a full range of facilities, and smaller towns and harbours often have moorings laid to the quay or buoys. The indented coastline has many uninhabited coves where anchoring is possible. During the peak summer months berthing can be crowded and expensive compared to other destinations.
Tides & Currents
The tidal range is small - up to 1m in the north, decreasing to about 35cm in the south. A weak current flows generally north-westward up the Croatian coast, but may strengthen and change direction in narrow channels between islands.
Weather
The best sailing season is from June to September – sailing is possible outside this period, but the winds are more variable. The prevailing wind in summer is from the northwest, force 3-5, though in the south there may be slightly stronger southerlies. The “bora”, a strong cold north-easterly, may blow for days, and thunderstorms with strong gusty winds may occur in summer.
Food & Wine
Fresh seafood, good quality meat, interesting Dalmatian wines.
History
Settled by Greeks and Romans, then Venetians and Turks, there are many well preserved medieval walled towns and historic ports, as well as archaeological sites.
Skipper’s Certificate and Radio Operator’s Licence mandatory - regardless of sailing experience!
