Yacht charter in Thailand means cruising in uncrowded waters, where you are more likely to come across exotic local vessels, such as traditional ‘longtail boats', than hordes of cruising yachts. It means exchanging pleasantries with friendly local fisherman – perhaps even buying some of their catch for lunch. It means discovering small island communities, with curious yet welcoming villagers.
Marinas and Anchorages
The main island of Phuket has excellent marinas and facilities for the yachtsman. It is recommended to stock up well on arrival, as the smaller islands have limited supplies. At practically all locations you will be at anchor overnight. Provisioning is readily available in Krabi and the island of Phi Phi.
Tides and Currents
The tidal range is quite large, around 3m in Phang Nga Bay - so if you are anchoring for lunch or overnight ensure that you have plenty of water under you!
Weather
Very humid tropical climate. March to May are the hottest months and it is cooler from November to February. June to October: rainy season & SW monsoon; November to May: NE monsoon. The latter season has more pleasant weather, plus better sailing conditions along the sheltered west coast.
Flights
Regular scheduled flights to Bangkok (12 hours) and then onward connections to Phuket, about an hour. There are limited charter flights direct to Phuket. Costs - £500 to £800 depending on season and availability.
